Low purchase prices and cheap sunflower imports will lead to bankruptcies among farmers, predicts the Sector
The low purchase prices and the cheap import of sunflower from Ukraine faced the Bulgarian grain producers with serious problems related to the realization of this year's harvest. According to producers, the prices of oilseeds imported from Ukraine are about BGN 0.30 to 0.40 lower per kilogram. Processors naturally prefer the lower price and refuse to accept the production of local farmers, the Thracian Union of Grain Producers points out, for example.
The Council of the EU approved the introduction of a temporary free trade regime with Ukraine, which provides for the elimination of tariffs on the import of Ukrainian goods for one year, resulting in a green corridor for the export of agricultural products from Ukraine. Statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture show that the areas sown with oil crops this year are larger than last year, but the farmers' costs for growing the crops are also several times higher, given the high prices of fuels, fertilizers, energy carriers, preparations. The only way is support from the state, the NAZ is categorical. The Minister of Agriculture, Yavor Gechev, and the management of the National Association of Grain Producers (NAG) discussed measures to guarantee food security and enhanced control of grain imports from third countries. As a possible measure, the representatives of the ministry and the producers discussed the separation and tracking of the grain produced in Bulgaria and imported from Ukraine, based on good practices that are already applied in member countries of the European Union.
At the meeting, grain producers and the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture discussed other topics such as the fight against the meadow butterfly and other plant pests, the requirements for crop rotation, the upcoming autumn fertilization and the eco-schemes in the Strategic Plan for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas for the period 2023-2027 The harvest of autumn crops has been completed in almost the entire country, with 6,305,500 tons of wheat, 617,200 tons of barley and 295,500 tons of rapeseed harvested, according to the data of the Ministry of Health. The average yield has decreased, the Sector reports. We remind you that wheat prices for the new harvest fell by more than 20%. According to data from the European Commission, 3.57 million tons of wheat were exported from the EU in the period 01.07 - 14.08.2022.
